In the 16th century, Quinta do Gradil was a royal hunting lodge, where a vast fauna and flora abounded. Deer, partridges, hares, rabbits and foxes were easily found there.

In the 17th century, Quinta do Gradil was a farmhouse. Wine was natural, closely related to the primitive winemaking process: fermented grape must. There was no technology or added sulphites.

Between 1765 and 1766, two licences by King Joseph I of Portugal decreed the grubbing up of vineyards in the region where Quinta do Gradil is located. However, a survey came to consider the lands as suitable to produce good wine blends.

The Marquises of Pombal owned the Quinta for most of the 20th century, until it was sold to Isidoro Maria d'Oliveira in 1963. Isidoro was a farmer, man of culture and poet, author of the poem "Saltimbancos".

Hailing from a family of wine merchants, Luís Vieira learned all the tricks of the trade from his grandfather António Gomes Vieira, a.k.a. Ganita. In May 1999, he purchased Quinta do Gradil.
